Blood sugar is usually seen as something only people with diabetes need to deal with. In reality, it affects every one of us. Fluctuations in blood sugar are often behind afternoon fatigue, sweet cravings, energy swings, and poorer focus. That afternoon coffee and pastry may seem like the easiest fix, but they usually keep the whole cycle going. A few simple habits can help you step out of it.
What is blood sugar, really?
Blood sugar (glucose) is the main source of energy for most cells in the body. It is especially important for the brain, which under normal conditions “uses up” roughly one fifth of our total energy expenditure.
How does it work? After a meal, carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which then enters the bloodstream. The pancreas responds by releasing insulin – a hormone that helps move glucose from the bloodstream into cells, where the body can use it or store it for later.
All of this is a completely natural process. The problem arises only when blood glucose, as glucose concentration is technically called, repeatedly rises sharply and then quickly drops again.
Why avoid blood sugar fluctuations?
Imagine driving a car. It is much smoother and gentler on the internal parts to maintain a steady speed than to slam on the gas and brake every few seconds. Our metabolism works in a similar way.

How can you keep blood sugar more stable?
1. Start every meal with protein and fibre

2. Carbohydrates are not the enemy
In recent years, carbohydrates have become something to fear – but unfairly so. The brain and muscles use them as a natural source of energy and many of us do not particularly thrive on a strictly low-carb diet.
The main difference lies in their quality. Instead of white bread and sugary cereals, try choosing foods such as legumes, oats, potatoes, or whole grains more often. They contain more complex carbohydrates, which are digested and absorbed more slowly. The same “function” is supported by the fibre found in fruit, which can replace sweets and sugary drinks.
3. Go for a walk after eating
After a main meal, instead of dessert, treat yourself to about 20 minutes of brisk walking. Working muscles can take up glucose from the blood through mechanisms that are largely independent of insulin. As a result, the post-meal rise in blood sugar is often lower.
4. Avoid sugary drinks
Sweetened soft drinks, juices, and energy drinks are among the fastest ways to send glucose levels sharply upward. They also load you with plenty of liquid calories that do not keep you full.
So the best choice remains water, mineral water, or unsweetened tea.
5. Sleep well
Sleep is surprisingly closely linked to blood sugar levels. Just a few nights of poor-quality or insufficient sleep can reduce insulin sensitivity and affect the hormones that regulate hunger and fullness. This often makes us crave sweet and calorie-dense foods more.

Do you need a continuous glucose monitor?
